Icelandic Grandmaster (1995) who became European Junior Champion in 1982 with an amazing score of 11½/13. Icelandic Champion in 1985.

Best results: Copenhagen in 1982, 1^st; Stockholm 1983, 1^st;  Barcelona 1987, 1^st; Gausdall Troll Master 2001, 1^st;  Rilton Cup 2004, 1^st; Gausdal II 2005, 1^st; Marx György Memorial in Paks in 2005, 1^st.; Leuven Open 2011, 1-5^th .

A participant in the 1999 World Championship and in three Olympiads. Akesson is also a Senior International Master in correspondence game with an ICCF ELO of 2578.

Best ELO: 2535 in 1999.
