Hungarian Grandmaster (1954), as well as International Correspondence Master (1966). Eight-times National Champion, also the Editor of Magyar Sakkelet (1951-1986). Won or shared first at Gyor in 1946, San Benedetto del Tronto in 1957 and finished second at Karlovy Vary and Venice in 1948. A participant in seven Olympiads. In one of them (Moscow 1956) his win against Vassily Smyslov brought the unprecedented loss by the Soviet side of an Olympiad match. He was called Dr. Fu Manchu by Bobby Fischer because of his appearance. Also the writer of several books on Hungarian chess and general chess history.
